Rotten in the State of Denmark

From Lyngby to Copenhagen to the Europe beyond: A travel log.

On Saying Goodbye

I wish I had the words to encompass everything this semester in Copenhagen has given me. New friends from the US and beyond, a new family I know I could visit anytime I wanted to, new fun games, new delicious foods, 6 new countries, and more experiences than I can recount (and quickly gave up trying to keep track of on this blog… Sometimes life is better lived than told.)
I mostly would just like to say thank you. To my amazing and loving mother who has supported me this semester as I dealt with being truly away from home, my host family and surrogate host family of Austin’s who have taken me under their wings and nurtured me like I was one of their own kids with such incredible generosity, Austin for helping me to learn and grow and love overseas, and everyone else who has helped me to laugh and learn here on this amazing island in Scandinavia.

Thanks everyone.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones!
For the last time, Hej Hej!

To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children,
to leave the world a better place,
to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived,
this is to have succeeded.

Snowpocalypse

Hello, folks!  It is officially finals week here in Copenhagen, and while I will be sure to try and find the time to put out a blurb about my weekend in Iceland and about my last days in DK, I am taking this brief post as a way to tell you - IT’S A WHITE WINTER.  It has been snowing constantly all weekend, and let me tell you…clumsy girl + no traction + 6+ inches of snow in two days = a mess!  Although it is difficult to get around (have you heard of salting, Denmark?), the snow is gorgeous, and I will be sad to go home to a grey, dead lawn (Indiana - please take hint and give me the white Christmas I’ll be missing here!)

Here is an article about the Snowpocalypse happening as I type this….

HYGGELIGT: Hygge is a really important part of Danish culture, and while there’s no direct English translation, it’s been explained to us as coziness, tranquility, or enjoying a cup of tea or a nice cold beer with good friends. We compare it to hakuna matata. Hygge is something you realize while or after it’s happening and you can’t plan it, but you recognize it by saying, “det var hyggeligt,” meaning, essentially, “That was hygge!”
